About PQE-2004
The Winter Colloquium on the Physics of Quantum Electronics,
known as PQE, is an annual physics conference
that attracts the world's experts in laser physics, quantum
physics, and many other areas. This was the 34th year of
the meeting.
A

The
Journal of Modern Optics was published as a proceedings for
the conference. The following is a reprint of the
foreword
of that special issue.
The 34th Winter Colloquium on the Physics of Quantum Electronics
was held at Snowbird, Utah from 4-8 January 2004. The meeting as
always combined superb talks and informal discussions on a wide
range of topics in quantum electronics and quantum optics. The
meeting was organized by Marlan 0. Scully, George R. Welch and
M. Suhail Zubairy, all of Texas A&M University. This
year’s meeting featured new research results in the areas
of quantum information, coherent control, photonics materials
including artificial materials, electromagnetically-induced
transparency, gamma-ray nonlinear optics, biophotonics,
ultrafast laser spectroscopy, quantum thermodynamics, and
quantum optics theory. A special feature of the meeting was the
presentation of the Willis
E. Lamb medal for Laser Science and Quantum Optics to Karl
Kompa, Stuart Rice and Lu Sham.
